LATE MODELS LAND MAJOR EVENT AT VALVOLINE RACEWAY
official release: Valvoline Raceway - October 20, 2014

Late Model racing in New South Wales is set for a major boost in profile at Valvoline Raceway this season with a blue-ribbon race event in January.

The 40-lap “Late Model Easternapolis” is expected to attract a crack field of local cars, interstate heroes and even Americans to the first of what is hoped will be an annual affair around the VR clayway.

“The Late Models have so much to offer race fans,” says Valvoline Raceway Managing Director Steven Green, “their racing is furious, they look spectacular on track and they sound tremendous. I think that their regular appearances combined now with the Easternapolis means that the class will really go forwards in leaps and bounds. There’s a lot to be excited about.”

Late Model mover and shaker, car owner, racer and businessman Bruce Mackenzie visited the Valvoline Raceway office earlier this week to meet with track management.

“The meeting was very productive,” smiles Mackenzie, “I came away from it feeling buoyant about the future and comfortable in the knowledge that Valvoline Raceway believes in our future. We all feel that the Easternapolis is a race that can really boost our car count and our overall appeal. It’s a win-win.”

Mackenzie’s company Time Target (a workforce management, time and attendance and rostering solutions company) is heavily involved in the sponsorship of the race, as is Mark Cooper’s American Tire & Racing Services.

The event will be held on Saturday night, January 10, 2015 and feature a 40-lap Feature Race with a significant increase in prize money across the board.

There is also an additional bounty to be added should the interstate car count increase.

The ‘lap leader’ concept will also be floated with sponsorship at $100 per lap offered to the sponsor, team and fan fraternity.

“We’ve had some great success with the lap leader sponsorship program already this year with Sprintcars and we expect that there will be a ground-swell of support for the Late Models as well,” says Green.

American Steve Francis seems a likely starter for the Easternapolis with the possibility of at least another USA starter as well.

With the Australian title being held at Kingaroy the weekend before there’s a strong chance that many of the travelling teams – including the powerful West Aussie contingent – will make a beeline to Valvoline Raceway.

More information on the 40 Lap Late Model Easternapolis will follow in weeks ahead.

BEN NICASTRI WINS NSW LATE MODEL SERIES
Ben Nicastri (N99) has won the NSW Late Model Series in a close finish with Nathan Disney (N11). Whereas Disney had some car issues throughout the season, Nicastri was rock solid for the most part, and that consistency has rewarded him with the Series victory. Dave Robertson (X4) was well back in 3rd, with Michael Hickey (N51) and Todd Bayley (N19) rounding out the Top 5. Click here for the full Series points.

LATE MODELS IN ACTION AT TAMWORTH
NSW Late Models winds up its 2013/14 season at Tamworth Speedway (NSW) Saturday May 24. The event is the Final Round of the NSW Pointscore Series, and has attracted a small but quality field. The NSW Series is currently topped by Nathan Disney (N11) who holds a slender two point margin over Ben Nicastri (N99). Both racers are entered, as is third placed Dave Robertson (X4). Although Robertson cannot breach the points gap to Disney and Nicastri, he could be the ‘spoiler’ of the Round, capable of mixing it at the front and taking points off either driver. A number of country based teams, and new drivers to the division, are also making the journey to Tamworth, including Goulburns Ben Seery (N8) and Bathurst’s Wade Carter (N24). The event is being supported by Masterlift Forklifts.

NEW DIRECTOR FOR NSW LATE MODELS
Ross Nicastri has stepped down as a Director of NSW Late Models, but will still be involved at a sub-committee level. Replacing Nicastri as a Director is Russell Bayley. NSW Late Models is very appreciative of the dedication shown by Nicastri in his term as a Director.

RYAN FENECH WINS GRAND NATIONAL
With one previous A Main victory at Valvoline Raceway (NSW) in his maiden season of Late Model racing, Ryan Fenech returned to the same track on Saturday March 29 and was back in victory circle once again, this time in the prestigious Grand National. After a 2nd and 3rd in his Heats, Fenech worked his way forward quickly in the 20 lap A Main, to be running 2nd by lap 5. Dean Hickey (N90) lead the first few laps before Ross Nicastri (N3) took up the front running on lap 3. Fenech closed on Nicastri at a rapid rate, and as he backed off to avoid a major collision after making light contact, was clipped by Todd Bayley (N19), and collected hard by a charging Dave Robertson (X4). Robertson was out of the race, as was the race leader Ross Nicastri who had a tyre go down. Rain started to fall with 4 laps remaining and the race was declared, with Fenech finishing four seconds clear of veteran Barry Kelleher (N65), with 3rd placed Ed Borg (N67) right on the rear barwork of the N65. Kelleher, who started on the front row, fell back early, but moved back into contention at half distance. Heat wins went to Nathan Smee (N15), Darryl Grimson (N12), Bayley, and Ross Nicastri.

NEW FACE IN VALVOLINE RACEWAY WINNERS CIRCLE
NSW Late Models turned on plenty of action at Valvoline Raceway (NSW) Saturday January 4 but when the engines went silent at the end of the 20 lap A Main it was a new face that graced the victory podium. Ryan Fenech has only a handful of Late Model race starts to his credit, but ran in the top four all race, and two laps from home worked into the lead to take a remarkable victory. The young racer was at the wheel of his new #29 MasterSbilt that only turned a wheel in anger in mid December. Chasing Fenech to the flag was Robert Carrig (#21), and Todd Bayley (#19), who has shown that he is a consistent top three finisher. Bayley and Dave Robertson (#X4) won two Heats each, with Robertson leading the A Main for the first 10 laps. He would eventually finish 4th. Bayley then went to the front, leading laps 11 through 18, before Fenech unleashed his late race move to grab the chequered flag.

Dave Robertson (N4) and Graham Lillford (N44) were the remaining finishers. The USA v AUS part of the program did not start too well for the overseas visitors with both Casebolt and Steve Francis (USA0) hitting the wall and sustaining car damage in Hot Laps. Both missed Heat 1 that was won by an in form Ben Nicastri. The two US racers made it out for Heat 2 with Francis winning from Casebolt. Unfortunately Francis pulled out with car issues in Heat 3, sending him into retirement for the night, with Casebolt taking the win. Four three lap match races were scheduled as the USA v AUS component of the program but with Francis out Robertson stepped up to join Ben Nicastri and Disney in battle against Casebolt. Ben Nicastri and Casebolt each won two races. Blair Granger (Q5), Matt Ingrey (Q17), and Ross Nicastri (N3) all experienced issues in the early part of the program that saw them unable to start the Feature.

ROSS NICASTRI ELDORA DREAM DAY 3 RESULTS
Ross Nicastri competed in Night 3 of the Dream at Eldora Speedway (USA) Saturday June 8. The Dream format see’s six Heats where the top three from each qualify to the 100 lap $100,000 to win A Main. Ross was up in Heat 2, facing a tough field of competitors. When racing got underway, the track proved even tougher, as the field in Heat 2 ran the duration of the race flat chat, single-file, using a cushion that had developed mid track. The best Ross could do was a 12th place finish, breaking an axle tube in the process. This meant Ross would miss a direct transfer spot, but the team set about changing the diff just in case a C Main position became available. As luck would have it, with a few drivers having to use provisional transfer spots to the A Main, and one driver having to withdraw from the C Main, Ross became the first alternate and was able to start at the rear of the 15 lap race. Ross steadily worked his way forward through the 24 car field to a very respectable 11th place finish at the completion of the 15 lap journey. The result however, was not good enough to earn a transfer spot to the B Main. With the top 6 placegetters in the C Main removed from the track the remaining starters lined up in running order for a 5 lap ‘Scramble’ to end their nights racing. Ross started 5th in the US$1000 to win ‘Scramble’ and finished 4th, to complete what had been a memorable Dream campaign.

ROSS NICASTRI ELDORA DREAM DAY 2 RESULTS
Ross Nicastri was back in action at Eldora Speedway (USA) Friday June 7 in Night 2 of the Dream. Ross qualified in 63rd position (83 cars went against the clock) with a time of 16.318 (Jonathan Davenport was fastest with a 15.386). In even Heat 3 (that saw the top 4 transfer to the Night 2 even Main) Ross finished 6th after running 5th early, and having a great battle with Bobby Pierce. In the Second even Consolation Ross finished 11th. Racing resumes at Eldora Saturday June 8 with Ross starting from position 11 in Heat 2. Only the top 3 transfer direct to the Dream A Main, and it will be a big ask for Ross as the Heat line-up includes Jarrad Landers, Duane Chamberlain, Matt Miller, Shannon Babb, Jimmy Owens, Shane Clanton, Jeep Van Wormer and Steve Shaver. Racers finishing outside the top 3 will contest B & C Mains in an effort to qualify for the big 100 lap, $100,000 to win A Main.

ROSS NICASTRI ELDORA DREAM DAY 1 RESULTS
Ross Nicastri competed in Night 1 of the Dream at Eldora Speedway Rossburg Ohio (USA) Thursday June 6. In a field of 84 Ross qualified in 63rd position (after being 21st in the qualifying order) with a time of 16.767 (Shane Clanton topped the charts with a 15.387). Transferring into the 'odd' group of racers Ross started 8th in his Heat and finished 7th (in a Heat won by John Blankenship, and featuring Jonathan Davenport, Dale McDowell, Shannon Babb, and Earl Pearson). Ross than competed in the 2nd 'odd' Consolation, starting 6th and finishing 7th. Day 2 of the Dream is Friday June 7.

ROSS NICASTRI TO LIVE THE DREAM
After returning home from the USA in early May, following a brief Racing Tour, Ross Nicastri is heading back stateside on Monday June 3 to compete in the 19th Annual Dirt Late Model Dream at Eldora Speedway Rossburg Ohio. Accompanying Ross on this trip is wife Jenny, and Peter Granger from Goulburn, who travelled with Ross on his tour and worked tirelessly throughout. Ross would like to especially thank Peter for his efforts. After landing in the US the trio will drive directly to the Steve Francis Workshop in order to arrive Tuesday morning to undertake final prep work on the #3 Barry Wright Race Car before heading to Eldora on Wednesday afternoon. Ross commences his Dream campaign Thursday June 6. Under a revamped format for this year’s Dream, each night will be busy. Thursday and Friday’s multi-car time trial sessions will divide the entrants each night into even and odd groups, with each group competing in a complete menu of Heat races, B Features and 25 lap A Features on both Thursday and Friday - upwards of 20 races nightly. Saturday’s traditional program of six Heat races will be lined up by using a driver’s fastest time trial lap from either Thursday or Friday. The Heat race finishes will continue to be used to line up the C Feature, C Scramble, B Feature, B Scramble, and the rich 100 lap $100,000 to win Dirt Late Model Dream. Ross is confident of a good showing, after time trialling 9th fastest in the Southern 100 at Southern Ohio Speedway in early May. Following the Dream the team will clean and prep the car before it is shipped to Australia, with Ross, Jenny, and Peter, flying home Wednesday June 13. Ross has been very happy with the performance of his new Barry Wright Race Car, and is looking to a strong 2013/14 Australian season. Ross would also like to thank the following individuals and personnel who contributed to a very enjoyable US Racing Tour : Steve, Amanda, and Alexis Francis for taking the Australian guys into their home and treating them like family for 3 weeks, locals Jeff, Lee, and Shannon, and the entire Clint Bowyer Race Team, Barry and Lance Wright plus all the team at Barry Wright Races Cars, Larry and the gang at Ponderosa Speedway, plus the local photographers and media for their hospitality.

Tim Bink once again turned in the drive of the race, storming through the field to be 2nd on lap 10 after being only 11th on lap 1. Bink then held that position to race end, while Nathan Smee secured 3rd. Smee had earlier been involved in a battle with Dave Robertson for 2nd. Nathan Disney worked his way towards the front but went out of the race on lap 9, with Robertson also exiting on the same lap. Grimson and Robertson were the Heat winners. Click here for results.

DARRYL GRIMSON DEBUTS NEW CAR WITH VICTORY
Darryl Grimson (#67) made his first Sydney start of the season a successful one by snaring victory in the A Main of Round 9 of the NSW Late Model Series held at Sydney Speedway (NSW) Saturday March 9. Grimson was at the wheel of a brand new car out of his MasterSbilt Australia workshop, and lead all 16 laps of the race, after finishing second in both of his Heats earlier in the program. Grimson was also the only Late Model racer to record a sub 15 second lap on the night. Nathan Disney (#11) also enjoyed a strong Round by finishing second in the A Main, after winning a Heat, and placing third in another. In only his third start in a Late Model Tim Bink (#41) showed once again that he is going to be a force in the division by securing third on the podium. Bink finished well down the field in his two Heats, but stormed home in the final laps of the A Main to back up his sensational third placing at the February 16 meeting. Only six cars finished a tough A Main, with Ron Pyne (#9), US racer Steve Lance Jnr (#23U) and Todd Bayley (#19) finishing behind the placegetters. BINK FINDING HIS FEET
“Violent!” That’s the word Tim Bink has used to describe what it’s like to drive in the premier speedway sedan class: Late Models. Despite the shock to the system, the second generation racer is quickly finding his feet. In only his second race meeting in a Late Model, Bink managed a pleasing and encouraging third–place finish in last weekend’s Feature race at Sydney Speedway. ROBERTSON CONTINUES WINNING WAYS
Round 7 of the NSW Late Model Series was held at Sydney Speedway (NSW) Saturday February 16 with pointscore leader Dave Robertson (#4X) taking another A Main victory. Robertson was relatively quiet in the two Heats, only recording a 4th and 7th place finish. In the 15 lap A Main he ran 3rd early, before moving up to 2nd, and securing the lead on lap 5. From there he held sway while a good battle ensued between Michael Hickey (#51) and Ron Pyne (#9). Pyne crossed the line in 2nd two laps from the chequer but lost the spot the next lap to Hickey, who had lead the first four laps, before settling into 2nd for most of the journey. Hickey secured 2nd at the flag, with Tim Bink (#41) the other podium finisher after finding his way past Pyne on the final lap. The two Heats were won by Bruce Mackenzie, who passed Ron Pyne at half distance, and Nathan Disney, who lead Heat 2 from go to whoa. Click here for complete results.

FRANCIS AND ROBERTSON WIN MINI FEATURES ON NIGHT 1 OF GRAND NATIONAL
Night 1 of the Late Model Grand National was held at Sydney Speedway (NSW) Saturday January 26 with Steve Francis (USA15) and Dave Robertson (X4) winning the Mini Features. Francis was the fastest of the 21 cars in Time Trials and showed his intentions by topping the chart with a stunning 14.0780, a new one lap track record. Francis then came out in Heat 1, and moved from 3rd to 1st by half distance, to secure victory from Western Australia's Michael Holmes (W91) and Nathan Disney (N11). Heat 2 saw Nigel O'Neill (N101) pass early race leader Ron Pyne (N9) at half distance to win by a slender margin, with Western Australia' s Jay Cardy (W52) holding 3rd for all 8 laps. The Final Heat of night 1 was won by Dave Robertson (X4) from Jeff Searle (N33) and Michael Hickey (N51). Searle, a relative newcomer to Late Model Racing, was impressive in leading the first 5 laps. Mini Feature 1 was a Steve Francis cake walk, as he raced to a six second all-the-way victory over Michael Holmes and Nathan Disney. Holmes and Disney, together with Ron Pyne, were embroiled in a good race-long battle for the minor placings. Mini Feature 2 saw Dave Robertson control the race from the outset and record a four second victory over Nigel O'Neill and Jay Cardy. Cardy held second past half distance in the 15 lap race, and was then involved in a great battle with O'Neill who just nosed out the West Aussie on the run to the flag. Night 2 of the Late Model Grand National will be held Sunday January 27. Click here for complete results.

STEVE FRANCIS WINS NSW LATE MODEL TITLE
US Late Model racer Steve Francis has added to his Australian race winning tally by dominating the A Main of the NSW Late Model Championship held at Goulburn Speedway (NSW) Saturday January 19. Francis has been in sensational form since landing back in Australia in late December, with his NSW Title victory complimenting his recent Australian Title win, and domination of the 'Wild West Tour' in Western Australia. Francis secured the NSW Title driving a Mastersbilt Gen X car built by himself, and owned by NSW racer Bruce Mackenzie. Defending NSW Champion, and fellow US racer, Devin Moran, finished 2nd to Francis, with Western Australia racer Michael Holmes, who Francis drove for in the West Coast part of his Tour, finishing 3rd. NSW TEAMS OUT OF LUCK IN AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP
NSW Late Model Teams were out of luck in the 12th Australian Late Model Championship held at Bunbury Speedway (WA) January 11/12. The matching Nicastri Motorsport machines of US sensation Devin Moran (USA#99) and Ross Nicastri (#99) were both sidelined on night one with engine woes, while Darryl Grimson in the #6 smacked the back straight wall and retired on lap 14 while running 7th. Grimson had performed well in the Heats on night one with a 4th and 2nd, after recording the 15th fastest time of the 33 cars in Time Trials. He failed to finish the Preliminary A Main however. On night two Grimson finished 3rd in his Heat, and won the B Dash. Ross Nicastri's engine problem surfaced following Time Trials where he was 4th fastest. Devin Moran could only manage 30th fastest in Time Trials, and retired from his first Heat. The Australian Title was won by US star Steve Francis, going back-to-back after claiming victory in Sydney 12 months earlier, with Western Australia racers Craig Vosbergen and Warren Oldfield 2nd and 3rd.

Veteran racer Barry Kelleher ran 3rd for the full 12 laps and secured his first podium of the season. After a DNF in Heat 1, Ron Pyne, in a car that was only unloaded from a shipping container two days prior to the event, placed 4th in the A Main after charging through the field. Young female racer Jessica Cassidy impressed by running 4th for most of the journey before Pyne snatched the position away in the final laps. Liam Heaton made his Late Model debut and recorded two 4th place finishes in the Heats, and finished 6th in the A Main. The two Heats were won by Bruce Mackenzie and Pyne. ROBERTSON WINS ACTION PACKED A MAIN AT SYDNEY SPEEDWAY
Dave Robertson (X4) broke through for his maiden A Main victory of the season in a sensational 20 lap A Main at Sydney Speedway (NSW) Saturday December 8. The race, that was Round 4 of the NSW Series, saw a tremendous battle for positions early, with Nigel O'Neill  leading the way as Robertson, Ben Nicastri, and Nathan Smee engaged in a fierce battle for the minor positions, with the placings chopping and changing almost every lap. O'Neill, a graduate from the open wheel divisions, who had earlier in the night won a Heat to take his first Late Model victory, dropped off the pace at half distance and eventually retired. Robertson then took up the front running, as Smee and Nicastri continued to swap positions. Robertson crossed the line three seconds clear of a hard charging Dean Smith, who had started rear of field. Smith got past Smee with three laps remaining, and claimed Ben Nicastri on the final tour. Smee finished 4th, on the rear barwork of Nicastri. Earlier in the evening Robertson (2) and Ben Nicastri joined O'Neill as Heat winners. Click here for complete results.

NICASTRI CREATES HISTORY

Ben Nicastri created history Saturday December 1 when he became the youngest Australian driver to win a major Late Model event in Australia. In what was an unlikely victory, he triumphed in the South Australian Title at Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway.

The 20 year old from south western Sydney (NSW) made a terrible start to his South Australian Title campaign, after crashing out of his opening Heat and being forced to miss the second Heat. After some hurried repairs from the Nicastri Motorsport team, he managed to make it out for the third and final Heat of the night, finishing second, and then started at the rear of the field for the Feature.

With it all to gain and nothing to lose, Nicastri, feeling quietly confident of being able to challenge for a podium finish despite his limited track time on the night, charged his way through the field with growing confidence and burning determination, and by the middle stages of the 20–lap event made his way into podium contention. Nicastri then moved up to second place on lap 15 after his dad, and long–time race leader, Ross, was controversially sent to the rear of the field for an incident while battling for the lead. Nicastri’s dad’s misfortune played into Ben’s hands, and he made the most of the situation by taking control of the lead shortly after the restart, and then going on to score a historic win.

“This is without a doubt the biggest win of my career and it certainly made all the hard work we put in throughout the night worthwhile,” a jubilant Nicastri said. “For the Feature, I was running up towards the top of the track, and was able to move forward, as no one else was running up there. I had it all to gain and nothing to lose, so I just gave it everything I had and was rewarded with the biggest win of my career.”

Nicastri paid homage to the efforts of the Nicastri Motorsport team for helping make his South Australian Title success possible.

“In all honesty, I thought my night was over when I crashed out in my opening Heat, but when we got back into the pits my team was all hands on deck and I can’t thank them enough,” he expressed. “To go out in the Feature and pick up the win was a great reward for the whole team for all of their tireless efforts to get me back out on the track.”

The Nicastri Motorsport team of Ross and Ben Nicastri return to their home track, Sydney Speedway, this Saturday night (December 8) and are aiming to continue their good 2012–13 season form.

For the 2012–13 season, the Nicastri Motorsport team are proudly supported by: Frank’s Auto Parts, Atlantic Oils, Diesel Designs, American Tire & Racing Services, Smithfield Diff and Gears, and Bill Martin Dyno Tune.

BEN NICASTRI WINS SOUTH AUSTRALIAN TITLE
Young NSW racer Ben Nicastri is the new South Australian Late Model Champion after a determined drive in the 25 lap A Main held at Borderline Speedway Mt Gambier Saturday December 1. Nicastri's victory did not come easy, after he crashed out of Heat 1 and missed the next Heat while the damage was repaired. Forced to start off the back of the 10 car A Main field after a 2nd place in his final Heat, Nicastri worked his way to the front in a gutsy drive to claim his first major Late Model title. Steve Vaughan, who has been super consistent in his debut Late Model season, finished 2nd, with Luke Raymond 3rd. Matthew Nulty made his Late Model debut and finished a sensational 4th. Heat winners were Luke Raymond (2), Ross Nicastri (2), Cary McCarthy, and Steve Vaughan.

ROSS NICASTRI IN VICTORY LANE AT LISMORE
A tough night at Lismore Speedway (NSW) Saturday November 17 saw Ross Nicastri battle not only his rivals, but also the weather, to emerge triumphant in Round 3 of the NSW Late Model Series (Late Model Sedan Gold Cup). Nicastri has been in fine form thus far this season, and demonstrated that again at Lismore, where he won both his Heats before working his way through the pack to take the lead away from Nick Girdlestone at half distance in the Feature, to go on and record a solid victory, marking this third straight win in three Rounds. Dave Robertson also enjoyed a top night, winning both his Heats, and placing 2nd in the Feature after starting from position eight. Queensland racer Matt Ingrey (Q54) finished 3rd. Light rain at the track made conditions difficult for everyone but the racers adjusted to the conditions and put on a top show for the race fans who braved the elements. ROSS NICASTRI MAKES IT TWO FROM TWO AT SYDNEY SPEEDWAY
Ross Nicastri was back at Sydney Speedway (NSW) Saturday November 3, and despite the fact he was steering the #99 usually reserved for son Ben, it made little difference to the result, as he quickly worked his way forward in the 20 lap A Main, to pass Ben (driving the #3) on lap 5, and reel off the remaining laps to pay another visit to victory lane. Ben eventually finished 3rd, after being passed by Nathan Smee (#15) at mid distance. Smee's 2nd place capped a great night for the Speedcar racer, after earlier winning a Heat. Other Heat winners were Dave Robertson, Bruce Mackenzie, and Ross Nicastri. The 12 car A main field was reduced by two early when Col Robinson and Michael Hickey made contact. Robert Carrig returned to the track after his rollover at the last meeting, and made amends for that misfortune somewhat, with a solid 4th place in the A Main, one spot ahead of Dean Smith (#90) who was enjoying his first start of the season. Carrig emerged unscathed from the wreck. The start order was determined by a random draw with Bruce Mackenzie off pole. Mackenzie showed great form to finish 4th, but once Ross Nicastri hit the front he dominated, although Ben closed on several occasions. The younger Nicastri had his hands full in the race though, as Bruce White challenged for the 2nd position on numerous occasions. White dropped off the pace late in the race and retired leaving Robertson as the only challenger to the Nicastri domination. Robertson pressured Ben Nicastri in the final laps but had to settle for 3rd. Click here for Pit Photos from the race. Click here for Race Results.
